Anxiety

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health conditions among adults, with about 1 in 5 people experiencing anxiety at some point in their lives. Generalized anxiety disorder often carries symptoms of persistent and excessive worry about activities or events—even ordinary, routine issues.

While everyone experiences nervousness, anxiety disorders have a debilitating impact on an individual’s productivity and relationships. At Andala, we treat patients who suffer from depression accompanied by anxiety. Our behavioral health care providers are proud to treat each patient with care and attention.

General Information

Treatment Options at Andala

Andala’s psychiatric care teams are able to create tailored treatment plans for each patient’s needs. We firmly believe that behavioral health treatment is not a “one-size-fits-all” solution and that sometimes a more powerful intervention is needed.

When it comes to treating depressive disorders accompanied by anxiety, we take into account patient history, previous treatment attempts, and the way symptoms present in each case.

Ketamine Therapy

Ketamine therapy is a treatment option for depression with some comorbid anxiety disorders. Eligible patients who choose this treatment option are administered a very low dose of ketamine for about 45 minutes.

Potential side effects may occur during and a short time after the treatment, including:

  • Fatigue
  • Grogginess
  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Perceptual disturbances

Ketamine infusion therapy is a safe, evidence-based, rapid-acting option to help manage symptoms of depression with comorbid anxiety.

Spravato (Esketemine Nasal Spray)

Spravato (nasal esketamine) is an FDA-approved treatment for depression in people who have not responded to oral antidepressant medications.

Some patients experience anxiety and depression as comorbid conditions, and addressing one disorder oftentimes reduces the severity of the other. Esketamine, also called s-ketamine, is “one half” of ketamine—the other half being r-ketamine, its mirror image molecule.

Spravato is a nasal spray, administered in an Andala clinic setting, that may more rapidly treat symptoms than standard SSRI medications. Side effects may be experienced for up to two hours after taking it and may include:

  • Dissociation
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Sedation
  • Transiently increased blood pressure

Common Symptoms of Anxiety

Anxiety can manifest in many different ways depending on a variety of factors. It is not uncommon for people with anxiety to struggle with other mental health issues.

The most common comorbidity we see is concurrent depression and anxiety, which can make both conditions more difficult to treat.

Common symptoms of anxiety include:

  • Nervousness
  • Racing thoughts
  • Feelings of panic or dread
  • Insomnia
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms (over/under eating, constipation, diarrhea, etc.)
  • Increased sweating
  • Rapid breathing and/or heart rate
  • Panic attacks
